The Mountain Dulcimer, An Appalachian Tradition Since the 1800′s
January 27th, 2010The Mountain, or Appalachian Dulcimer first appeared in the United States in the early 1800′s in the southern Appalachian mountains. The Scots-Irish settlers were the ones to introduce it. It is in the Zither family, although it is not played by hammering the strings, as is the tradition with these other types of instruments. Rather, it is strummed like a guitar. It was commonly used as a parlor instrument, due to its limited volume and pleasing tone, and was common at many family gatherings.
There are several varieties of Dulcimer, although most have the same shape, made of the same materials, and have the same number of strings. Tuning varies though, depending on the tradition of music played, and whether the song is in Major or Minor keys. Traditionally, it is strung with anywhere from 2 to 12 strings (in courses/ groups of 2), and is usually played by placing the Dulcimer on ones lap, strumming and/or plucking the strings with one hand, and fretting with the other. The finer examples are made from wood, which produce the more desired tones, although various materials have been used, such as plastic and even cardboard.
The Appalachian dulcimer achieved a renaissance in the 1950s urban folk music revival in the United States. Musicians such as Jean Ritchie, a Kentucky musician who introduced the instrument to New York City audiences, have been credited for this. Then in the 1960s, the American folk musician Richard Fariña (1937–1966) became the first to utilize an Appalachian dulcimer in a less traditional way. He pointed out its similarity in tone to some Middle Eastern and Asian instruments, such as the Zither. There are many styles performed by modern dulcimer musicians, including traditional folk music and other popular and experimental forms, although most perform in more or less traditional dulcimer styles. More recently, musicians such as Lindsay Buckland, Bing Futch, Butch Ross and Quintin Stephens have contributed to the popularity of the solid-body electric dulcimer, which has gained popularity due to its more approachable and modern sound. Additionally, the amplification of these electric versions allow the musician to be heard with the rest of the band. Dulcimer festivals now take place regularly in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, and Ireland, as the Appalachian dulcimer has achieved a rather large following in a number of countries. The Dulcimer has also become a popular instrument for music teachers, due to relative ease in mastering the basics, as well as its relatively low cost to acquire.

West Coast Rap 2011
January 26th, 2010Remember the glory days of West Coast Rap back in the mid 90′s? Anyone keeping track knows West Coast Rap never really went anywhere but hasn’t hit the levels it was at when you couldn’t turn on a radio without hearing Tupac, Nate Dogg, Dr. Dre, Snoop Dog and more. It is arguably where “gangsta rap” was born, soon to be imitated some would say (we might be dipping our toes into a touchy subject, but you have to give Tupac and Dre credit here we think) by the east coast rappers. This is a switch where through the 80′s more times than not it was the west following the east’s lead. Anyway, it wasn’t all the gangsta genre, you saw the rise of more poppy rhymers inspired by the likes of P-Funk, and Latinos got into the game as well with popular artists like Cypress Hill. By the late 90′s and into the 2000′s the rap scene was taken over again in large part by the east coast and the emerging “dirty south.” Are we going to see the “West rise again” to the popularity levels the area saw in the 90′s? Well MP3 and downloads might have killed the type of dominance we used to see in any genre, but there is definitely an uptick going on and here are some of the names you will probably be hearing about real soon (if you haven’t already).
Nippsy Hussle can’t be called a freshman anymore, but he was named to XXL Magazine’s Freshman Top Ten back in 09. He’s released some great, if not well-known, albums since including Bullets Ain’t Got No Name Volumes 1, 2 and 3, and he’s appeared in collaborations with Snoop Dogg and Drake. He’s had several singles make the charts including an impressive piece, “Feelin Myself.” Rumor has it you’ll be hearing more of his unique style real soon, and it’s going to be bigger than ever. Dijon Thames Shariff, aka Mann is coming from west L.A. and got some of his music into the capable hands of Steve Lobel, who was then part of Sean Kingston’s management team. “Jerkin” got some criticism and mostly positive apparently because soon they were getting things done.
He was signed with Epic for a brief time for a series of single releases, after leaving them Mann kept at it. Look for the release of his debut album, “Mann’s World” coming out soon. The buzz around it says it’s going to be huge and Mann describes it as a mix between Chronic 2001 and Graduation… you can’t really go wrong with that mix we think. Bryan King is one of the newest names on the scene. Coming from CA but currently in China, he’s already started turning some heads with his single “Overseas” with Stumik of Wu-Tang Raekwon’s Icewater and French phenom Proff. Proff has a lot to say about his protege; “Be ready to hear and see Bryan King on major scenes and media outlets. His voice and laid-back charm will dazzle music lovers all around the world.” King is now with Black Box records and may soon follow the tracks of the West Coast rap stars so look for his debut album real soon.
Cajun’s Music- A Fresh String of Folk
January 25th, 2010The Cajun music, though rooted deep in Louisiana, has a long history that begins with the Acadian people of Nova Scotia. The Fiddles are heavily featured in Cajun music and lyrics are often sung in French. Over time, the different styles and variations have grown and gained popularity, but all forms of Cajun music share the certain rhythmic, instrumental and cultural aspects.
History:
Early Cajun music was developed by the Acadian people of Nova Scotia. Many of them moved down through the New England and into Louisiana, bringing their music with them. The Acadians had developed a music style that consisted of French lyrics set to energetic fiddle playing. Once in Louisiana, the Acadian people perfected this music style into Cajun music. The lyrics of early Cajun music described the harshness of life in the territory, or told humorous and sometimes bawdy stories. As different music styles began to influence Cajun music, various instruments were added.
Styles:
As the popularity of Cajun music grew and spread to other areas of the country, subgenres of Cajun music developed. Traditional Cajun musicians, such as legendary Cajun fiddler Dewey Balfa, and his band the Balfa Brothers, helped to popularize traditional Cajun music. As Cajun music became more mainstream, other music styles began to blend with it to form other varieties of Cajun-inspired music. Modern country music has had a large impact on Cajun music, and a subgroup known as Texas Swing Cajun was born out of the blending of country and Cajun styles. Another popular style, called Dancehall Cajun, moved away from the trend of using only a few instruments as backup, and added steel, electric and bass guitars.
Contemporary Cajun Music:
The Cajun music has experienced many revivals in popularity since its conception. Rock, blues, hip hop and many other modern styles have helped develop contemporary Cajun music. While most contemporary Cajun music groups now use mainstream instruments, such as drums and guitars, some still use traditional instruments like washboards and accordions. However Cajun music has changed over the centuries, it has always maintained its core components.
Instruments:
The Traditional Cajun music used only three instruments: the fiddle, the accordion and the triangle. These three instruments gave Cajun music a strong rhythmic presence, and are the basis for other Cajun music styles. In later years and styles, other instruments have become important to Cajun music, such as the steel guitar. Drums are also used in some modern styles, as well as several other types of guitars. Though Cajun music has added many new instruments to its changing style, almost all Cajun music still has the presence of the original three instruments, the fiddle, accordion and triangle.
Dance:
The Cajun dance has developed with Cajun music. The Cajun versions of mainstream dances, such as the waltz, the jig and the jitterbug were invented to accompany Cajun music. The Cajun dances are typically fast paced and energetic, and dancers will often use the whole floor space. The Cajun dances are performed at music festivals and competitions, as well as at private homes and gatherings in Louisiana.
